A New England roof gets heavy wet snow, wind-driven rain, months of freeze and thaw, and on the coast, salt air. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each.
Snow
Interlock panels weigh roughly 0.4 to 0.7 lb per square foot depending on profile, a fraction of natural slate or concrete tile. That leaves the structure's capacity for what a New England winter puts on it: heavy, wet snow. Smooth aluminum lets snow slide, so we plan snow guards over entries, walkways and the driveway at the quote.
Nor'easters
A nor'easter brings hours of wind-driven rain and gusts that work at loose edges and exposed screw heads. Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed. Wind resistance is warranted to 120 mph installed to manufacturer specification.
Ice dams
Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow that refreezes at the cold eaves. No roof covering stops that on its own, and ice damming is excluded from the material warranty. At the estimate we look at insulation and ventilation with you and tell you what we see.
Salt air
On Cape Cod, the Islands, the North Shore, the Rhode Island and Connecticut shoreline and the Maine coast, salt air corrodes steel fasteners and flashings. Aluminum cannot rust. It forms its own thin oxide layer, which re-forms if the surface is scratched.
Freeze-thaw
Months of freezing and thawing loosen asphalt granules and curl shingles; cedar takes on water that freezes in the grain. An aluminum panel absorbs nothing, so there is nothing in it for the cold to split.
Summer heat
The Alunar® finish uses pigments that reflect much of the sun's near-infrared energy: solar reflectance from 0.25 to 0.55 depending on color and thermal emittance of 0.84. Interlock roofs can cut cooling-energy use by up to 25% compared with conventional dark roofing; actual savings vary. The Alunar® finish is warranted for 30 years.

Why this system, in New England
Asphalt in New England
Freeze-thaw, nor'easter wind and summer heat work on asphalt shingles every year: granules loosen, edges curl and tabs lift. An Interlock roof has no granules to lose and no tabs to lift, and its panels lock to each other on all four sides.
Older homes
Interlock's Slate, Cedar Shingle and Shake profiles keep the look on a Colonial, a Cape, a Victorian or a farmhouse at roughly 0.4 to 0.7 lb per square foot, a fraction of natural slate. Sometimes. A single layer of asphalt can be roofed over only if an inspection finds it suitable; cedar shingles and shakes, concrete tile and natural slate always come off first. We check at the estimate and tell you which applies to your roof.
No roof covering stops ice dams on its own. They form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow that refreezes at the cold eaves, and ice damming is excluded from the material warranty. At the estimate we look at your insulation and ventilation with you and tell you what we see.
The manufacturer's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers the material and finish for the original purchaser for as long as they own the home, and it can be transferred once; the second owner is covered to 50 years from substantial completion. Workmanship is not part of that warranty; the installation is covered by our 10 Year Limited Labor Warranty, for ten years from the Substantial Completion Date.
