What an Interlock® aluminum roof is
An Interlock® roof is made of interlocking aluminum panels, each locked to its neighbors on all four sides with the fasteners concealed under the panel above. Nothing is screwed through the weather surface. The panels are stamped to look like slate, cedar shingle, shake or tile, or rolled as standing seam.
Made in North America: the panels are manufactured by Interlock Roofing at its plant in Delta, BC. In New England they are installed by Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc., the certified and exclusive Interlock® roofing contractor for New England, from our office in Walpole, MA.

Why aluminum, for a New England roof
Salt air can't rust it
Aluminum forms a thin oxide film that blocks further oxidation (ASM International). There is no steel inside an aluminum panel for salt spray on Cape Cod, the North Shore, the Rhode Island and Connecticut shoreline or the Maine coast to reach, so there is no red rust at cut edges or fastener holes.
It's light
Aluminum is about one-third the density of steel (ASM International). Interlock aluminum panels weigh roughly 0.4 to 0.7 lb per square foot installed, depending on profile, a fraction of concrete tile or natural slate.
Freeze-thaw has nothing to work on
Asphalt and wood take on water that freezes and thaws through a New England winter. Aluminum absorbs no water, so there is nothing in the panel for freeze-thaw to open up.
Snow slides
Smooth aluminum sheds the heavy, wet snow a nor'easter leaves behind rather than holding it. Where a slide would land on an entry, deck, walkway or driveway, we plan snow guards at the estimate.
The profiles, and what New England homeowners choose
Five aluminum profiles: Slate (the most popular), Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile and Standing Seam, plus solid copper for bays, porches and accents. Nine colors: Solid Copper, Copper Penny, Hunter Green, Black, Deep Charcoal, Musket Grey, Tile Red, Colonial Brown and Tudor Brown. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 slope.
Across our New England town pages the most common profiles in the job book are Original Shingle (2,152), Slate (2,041), Cedar Shingle (84). Original Shingle is the first Interlock shingle profile, no longer made; today's choices are the five above. Slate and Cedar Shingle suit Colonials, Capes and Victorians; on a historic house, check your local historic district commission's rules before you choose.
What's covered, in writing

- 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty on the finish.
- 10 Year Limited Labor Warranty from Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. on the workmanship of our installation (Form 5335).
- Wind resistance warranted to 120 mph installed to manufacturer specification.

How a roof gets done
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Consultation | At your home or over Zoom. We go through profiles and colors, look at photos of roofs like yours, and answer questions. |
| 2. Measure and inspect | We measure the roof and check what's on it now. Cedar, concrete tile and natural slate always come off; a single layer of asphalt can be roofed over only if the inspection finds it suitable. |
| 3. A written price after your roof consultation | Anything the inspection finds goes into the written quote before you sign, not into a change order later. |
| 4. Installation | Installed by our own company to the manufacturer's specification, with flashing, ventilation and snow guards as planned. |
| 5. After the job | The Guardian material warranty is issued by the manufacturer, and our New England service team handles any call after the job. |

Questions, answered
Who installs aluminum roofing in New England?
Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. installs the Interlock® aluminum roofing system across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine and Vermont from its office at 25 Walpole Park S Unit 7, Walpole, MA. The company was founded in 1999 and installs every roof itself. Call (508) 257-7859.
Is aluminum roofing good for New England winters?
Aluminum doesn't rust and absorbs no water, so freeze-thaw has nothing to work on, and its smooth surface sheds snow. Ice dams are a different matter: they come from heat loss into the attic and from ventilation, no roof stops them on its own, and ice damming is a stated exclusion of the material warranty. We look at ventilation and insulation with you.
Is aluminum roofing a good choice on the coast?
Yes. Salt air attacks steel wherever its coating is cut or scratched. Aluminum has no steel to rust: its own oxide film protects it, which is why it suits homes on Cape Cod, the Islands, the North Shore and the shorelines of Rhode Island, Connecticut and Maine.
Is an aluminum roof better than a steel roof?
They are both metal roofs, but steel depends on its zinc or aluminum-zinc coating to keep from rusting, and aluminum has no steel to rust. Aluminum is also about a third the weight. Steel roofing usually costs less up front. Our steel vs aluminum guide sets out the differences.
How much does an aluminum roof cost in New England?
It depends on the roof's area, pitch and complexity, what comes off, the profile and options such as the Class A assembly. You get a written price after your roof consultation, which is free; we don't publish a number that would be wrong for most houses.
Can an aluminum roof go over my asphalt shingles?
Sometimes: a single layer of asphalt can be roofed over only if our inspection finds it suitable. Cedar shakes, concrete tile and natural slate always come off first.
Is an aluminum roof noisy in the rain?
Installed over a solid roof deck and underlayment, as residential Interlock roofs are, it isn't the drumming of bare metal on an open-framed barn. The deck and underlayment are what make the difference.
How long does an aluminum roof last?
Aluminum has been known to last over 100 years. That is a property of the metal, not a promise; what is in writing is the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, the 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty and our 10 Year Limited Labor Warranty.
